General Questions
What services do you offer?
We take dogs on trail runs, scenic hikes, and swims providing exercise, enrichment, and adventure. We handle pick-up, hydration breaks, and drop-off for a stress-free experience.
Where do you take the dogs?
The trails we go on vary based on the time of year, temperature, and your location. Some of our frequented trails are Bear Canyon, Michael M. Emery, Gutierrez Open Space, Sulphur Canyon, and various sections of the Bosque. Our top priority is dog safety, which is how we best inform our trail decisions.
How long is each outing?
Including pick up and drop off, you can expect your dog to be with us for 90 minutes to just over 2 hours. The exact times are based on your location and which trailhead we are going to. That information will be provided during booking.
Dog Eligibility & Safety
What types of dogs are best suited for this service?
We cater to high-energy, athletic dogs who enjoy running and hiking. If you’re unsure whether your dog is a good fit, we offer a free consultation to assess their energy level and needs.
Does my dog need to be off-leash trained?
No, per local laws, we keep all dogs on a leash or long line.
What happens if my dog gets tired or needs a break?
We monitor each dog closely, adjusting the pace and taking breaks as needed to keep them healthy, happy, and safe.
How do you ensure my dog’s safety on the trails?
While there is inherent danger with being on trails, we do everything we can to keep your pet safe. We use sturdy leashes, carry water and first-aid supplies, and avoid extreme weather conditions. In addition, runners and hikers are not wearing headphones while on the trail so they can keep a close lookout for wildlife, cyclists, and other humans. Lastly, every employee has also taken the Red Cross Pet First Aid training to ensure proper handling in the event of an accident.
Logistics & Booking
How do I sign up?
Start by scheduling a free in-home consultation where we’ll meet your dog, review their health history, and go over our service agreement. Once that is complete, we will send you some paperwork and get you scheduled.
Do you run dogs in all weather conditions?
We run in most conditions but may adjust routes or reschedule during extreme heat, storms, or icy conditions for safety. For snowy or wet conditions, we use Musher's Paw Wax to keep your dog's paw pads healthy. However, we ask that you provide clothes and boots for your dog in the colder months if they are a thin-coated breed.
Do I need to be home for pick-up and drop-off?
Not necessarily! During our consult, we will discuss whether you would prefer for us to have a key, use a lockbox, a door/garage code, or if you'll be home.
Health & Requirements
Does my dog need to be vaccinated?
Yes, all dogs must be up to date on vaccinations, including rabies, to ensure safety for all participants.
Can puppies or senior dogs participate?
Trail Tail Adventures does follow veterinary guidelines. For puppies, small breed dogs can start running with us at 9 months old, medium breeds at 10-11 months, and large breeds at 12 months. Hiking requirements are a minimum of 6 months old across the board. Senior dogs do vary based on health and overall body condition. Please consult your vet as well as what is the best option for your dog. If you would like to book for shorter excursions, please call us!
What if my dog has special needs or takes medication?
Let us know during the consultation! We can accommodate many special needs and administer medications if required.
Behavior & Training
Does my dog need to be well-trained?
Basic leash manners and a friendly temperament are preferred, but we work with various energy levels and can discuss any concerns during the consultation.
What if my dog doesn’t get along with other dogs?
We primarily run dogs individually unless specifically requested for a compatible group run. If your dog prefers solo adventures, we’ll make sure they get one-on-one attention and create distance between them and other dogs we may see.
Other Logistics
What should my dog wear for the run?
A well-fitted harness or collar is ideal. We prefer to use hip belt leashes while running. However, if you have a preferred leash, we can use it.
Will my dog get dirty on the trail?
Possibly! While we do a basic wipe-down before drop-off, we recommend having a towel ready if your dog loves mud or water.
Do you send updates after each run?
Yes! We will provide a short report or photo update so you know how your pup did on their adventure.
